Seniors Fall Prevention Class
When older adults are enjoying their retirement, they rarely ever think of the possibility that they might fall. However, SeniorJournal.com reports that more than one in three senior citizens fall each year. Other statistics show that an older adult falls every 18 seconds and an elderly person dies of complications caused by a fall every 35minutes. Fall injuries are one of the main causes nationally for the loss of independence for people over the age of 60 and are the number one way seniors sustain injuries, so it may be important to take preventative measures.
What will be covered in the workshops:
How to get off the floor after a fall. You will be getting down onto mats and practice rising from the floor. Therapists will be available if extra help is needed.
You will be performing the most effective types of exercises to prevent falls, which will focus on improving balance and strength in the thighs, hips, legs, and trunk.
You will be taught how to appropriately stretch the proper muscles, in order to maintain efficiancy in your posture and gait, which will help conserve energy.
Class members also have a safe place to talk about their fear of falling so they don’t feel so alone.
The workshop meets for 45 minutes twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 to Noon.
